Ryan Gosling isn’t just a hot celebrity with a pet dog. He also cares about animal welfare and has called on Costco to go completely cage free for its chicken sources.
He teamed with the Humane Society in a letter o Costco CEO Craig Jelinek, urging it to buy eggs from suppliers that don’t keep their chickens in cages. The letter accused the company of buying its eggs from a supplier with an abusive history and then lying to customers about it.
Costco made a public commitment eight years ago to eliminate cage confinement of chickens from its supply chain.
“Video footage revealed abhorrent cruelty including rows and rows of birds confined in filth-laden cages with the mummified corpses of their cage mates,” Gosling wrote, referring to an undercover video conducted by the Humane Society. He went on to say that Costco markets these eggs in cartons that show birds in a green pasture, leading consumers the believe they are cage free
The egg supplier in question, Hillandale, claims the images are an isolated incident in a barn where the undercover worker held primary responsibility.
“It was his job to identify and address the types of issues that were shown, and he did not adequately perform his job requirements,” Hillandale said.
